Looking Up

Good morning,

Today's article might not make sense at first.  It is an article I wrote for New Year's Day of 2004.  I know this is not the last day of 2008, but it is the end of an "era" so to speak.  Each time we elect or re-elect a new president, we have a much bigger "fresh start" type shift.  So, for whatever reason, this article seemed to fit the mood of the day as people stand in long lines waiting to cast their votes and tomorrow even more people will be voting for some kind of a "new beginning" in America.

take care,

Skye Thomas

Feature Article of the Week:

Another Trip Around the Sun

Today, I am seeing the planet as a physical item spinning in space rather then as the conglomerate energies of all of its inhabitants.  We ride on this big blue rock year after year around and around its sun.  Is it no wonder that some of mankind's first gods were the sun and the actual vehicle we ride around on itself.  Every time I have tried to think about what it is I am supposed to tell you today in reference to New Year's Resolutions, I just keep seeing this stupid arrogant cowboy riding around on a planet as if it is a bucking bronco and thinking that he has got any control whatsoever as to where she is taking him.  Yeah, he can destroy her, but she won't let him choose the route they take as they fly through the cosmos together.  New Year's Eve celebrations are not about something so arbitrary as the fact that I am going to hang a new calendar on the wall.  It means that like a bronco rider, we have managed not to fall off and have ridden her around the sun one more time.

We have worshipped the sun for its warmth and the life force that its light provides us.  We have worshipped the moon from respect of her ability to move the tides and for somewhat controlling the cycles of reproduction.  We have worshipped volcanoes for fear of upsetting them.  We have worshipped rain, lakes, rivers, and oceans for the water and fertile lands they help us to harvest.  We have worshipped the planet itself as Mother Nature in hopes that she would be gentle and kind to us.  We have worshipped the stars and the heavens.  We have worshipped each other and we have worshipped mysterious unknown entities that we pray will watch over us.  It has always been mankind's inability to control the planet and the cosmos that leads us to praying to anything and everything to please be kind and do not let anything erupt, storm, flood, shake and rumble, drought, or in any way cause pain or famine to ourselves or those we like and care about.

As a child, I never could pray hard enough to make it snow so that school would be canceled the next day.  I grew up within ash dumping distance of Mt Saint Helens and I can remember when she blew.  I prayed like every frightened child in history has ever prayed that a volcano would spare them.  I prayed to her and I prayed to God.  She blew anyway.  I do not think we can pray the planet into doing or not doing anything whatsoever.  Science can help us to understand when and why these things happen, but we will never control them with our thoughts.

Most people are unaware of the paranormal studies that show man's ability to control his experiences of life with his mind.  They are unaware and untrained.  They are not on the same track with each other, all holding one common vision.  With so many different minds and hearts all with different goals, motivations, and levels of understanding pulling and tugging in different directions... at best the planet would be in utter chaos.  So it is in our best interest that we not be allowed to boss her around.  Perhaps that is the gift of protection that all of our centuries of prayers have afforded us.  Most would be better served to pray for the strength to survive what needs survived and the wisdom to know when to leave well enough alone.

In my youth, New Year's Eve celebrations were a cause for confetti and champagne.  A party for the simple sake of tradition looking for kisses at the stroke of midnight while good friends laughed and toasted each other to bless each other on their merry way into the next calendar year.  May you all prosper in money, love, and health!

Today, I see New Year's Eve as the celebration that we have survived another year on a horse that has been ridden hard and put away wet.  We do not take care of her and she constantly has to readjust herself to our arrogance and greed.  I celebrate her that she still takes such good care of us.  She still feeds us and gives us air to breathe despite our foolish ways.  I celebrate mankind and the fact that we have managed not to blow up the planet and ourselves yet.  I celebrate that people still come to other people's aid and that whenever evil shows itself, someone stands up in the name of good and does their best to bring things back into balance.  Today, I celebrate the ride itself.  Ah yes, sign me up for another trip around the sun!  This time I promise to be a kinder gentle passenger.
