Crooks, Thieves, Fakes, and Frauds

I want to thank those of you who have been sending me anonymous notes about people posting my articles on their websites and then pretending that they are the authors of those articles.  It is a very time consuming and depressing element of my job.  I cannot afford to hire a copyright attorney to hunt these people down and force them to do the right thing.  I wish I could grant all of you the legal right to step in on my behalf and take care of this ongoing issue.  I appreciate your efforts and am touched that you care enough to send the emails and letters in the mail.

Quote of the Week:

Feature Article of the Week:

Better Than Before

Few of us graduate from high school feeling as if we are perfect.  We do not assume that we have reached our full potential or that we have nothing left to aspire to.  By nature, we start out as something of an unwritten book waiting for the story to unfold.  Some do nothing more with their lives than to work a boring dull job, marry a boring dull person, and raise boring dull children.  However, most of us want something more than that.  We want to know on some level that if we were to go back to our high school reunions five, ten, twenty, or thirty years later, that we would be seen as someone who had a life worth living, that our story would be worth telling.  Even if only for our own peace of mind, we want to know that we end our lives better than how we began them.

For some, it is easy to take a bite out of life, to take risks, to go after their dreams without an ounce of fear or doubt to slow them down.  However, for most of us, there is some uncertainty, some apprehension.  Therefore, we take slow careful steps.  We play it smart.  We take a safe path with small increments of growth and not too many chances for failure.  Somewhere along the way, we wake up one morning realizing that we are living a dull and monotonous life.  We love our spouses and our children.  We may or may not love our jobs.  We try to tell ourselves that we are too busy to be bored.  But it happens; we end up in a rut.

How do we get past the uncertainty and self-doubt that cause us to make these ultra-safe choices that lead to uneventful lives?  How do we become braver and more self-assured so that we might go after our dreams with a little more gusto?  Without being reckless and foolish, how do we put some spunk back into our lives?

Go back to the classroom.  No, not the same high school classes, but to a community college.  Pick up one of their course catalogues and browse through it.  Find something entertaining that you might enjoy learning.  Take a dance class.  Take a pottery class.  Have you always been fascinated by ancient history?  Want to learn how to cook low-fat healthy meals that do not taste like dandelions and bark dust?  Learn a foreign language just for the fun of it.

It does not have to be at a community college, although you will find a great deal of interesting ideas there.  You can often find classes at local hardware stores.  You could learn how to refinish antiques or build your own closet organizers.  A friend of mine used to teach sewing classes through a local fabric store.  For only a bit more than the cost of the fabric and supplies, people learned how to make their own clothes that were more attractive, more durable, and less expensive than store bought.  Take swim lessons, windsurfing, water skiing, downhill skiing, or cross-country skiing lessons.  Tap dancing, ballet, square dancing, waltzing, you name it - someone teaches it.

Pick something fun, something that will entertain you.  Pick something that makes you feel excited and motivated to show up.  Pick something that peaks your curiosity even if others might think it is silly or irrelevant.  The idea is to spark YOUR mind, not to impress others with your choices.  Bring a friend or go alone and make new friends.  Bring your spouse or leave them at home so you can have some "me time" away from them.  The idea is to broaden your horizons, break up the monotony, give yourself something interesting to talk about when having lunch with friends, and give your mind and body something new to work on.  Studies have shown that people who continue participating in some type of moderate exercise and who find a way to keep their mind active and engaged suffer less depression, less age-related ailments, and less memory loss.  Finding new hobbies can be the gift to yourself that keeps on giving.

Because you are choosing subjects that you like and that inspire you, you will be happier and more enthusiastic about life.  People are naturally attracted to happy enthusiastic people.  If you are single, this could be a good way to meet people.  Chances are pretty slim that your soulmate is just going to knock on your front door.  Taking classes gives you an excuse to get out of the house and to mingle with others.  Couples looking for a way to reconnect can search through the class catalogue for something that they both find interesting and sign up together.  When was the last time the two of you had fun together?

As you learn interesting and fun new things, you will find your self-confidence building.  Once you realize that you can learn new things and that you excel at some of these new things, then it is less frightening to reach out beyond your comfort zone and try other things like going after your dream job, getting up the nerve to flirt with that cute stranger, or moving to a new city by yourself because that is where your dreams are more likely to come true.  A major research study found that building self-esteem does not make you smarter, prettier, funnier, or more likable.  However, it does give you the confidence to take chances and to go after what you want in life.  And it gives you the ability to say no to people and situations that are not in your best interest.

By taking classes and exploring new hobbies, you become a better version of yourself, someone stronger and more independent.  You are not bored and needy, you are interesting and fun.  You are healthier, happier, and filling the chapters of your life story with wonderful adventures and proud victories, a story definitely worth telling.
