Feature Article of the Week:

2011 - Yes, We Are

In 2008, the winning election theme centered on hope and changing things in a better direction; yes, we can.  In 2009 and 2010, we were blasted with one hellish moment after another, economic destruction, floods, oil spills, etc.  It is only natural that we would struggle to "keep hope alive".  We fought with each other over political, cultural, social, economic, medical and romantic rights and responsibilities.  Is this a country based on "every man for himself" or is this a country based on "brotherhood"?  Are we at our very core selfish or charitable?  It is easy to be kind and compassionate when there is more than enough to go around, but the true test of a society's character comes out when resources are scarce, or at least seem to be.  So with all that we were hit with, it is only natural that we did not accomplish a lot of "yes we can" types of things.  No, this article is not about Obama's agenda.  It is about whether or not "we the people" can still steer the course of this country as opposed to giving up and surrendering to the corporations that try so desperately to take control away from us.  Are we the captain of our ship?

When inspiring each other, there is a shift when "Yes, we can" becomes "Yes, we will."  And then there is that moment when we must decide if "Yes, we will" is actually going to become "Yes, we are."  Cheerleading and getting ourselves jazzed up to make big positive changes in the way our country does things is all good and well, but nothing gets accomplished until we actually roll our sleeves up and get to work doing whatever it takes to get us to wherever it is that we are trying to go.  For all of us who were inspired by the concepts of "yes, we can" this is the time for "yes, we are."

I base this on two observations, neither being more important or more influential to me than the other is.

First, astrological observations...

Over the last two years, we have dealt with Saturn and Uranus in opposition with each other.  As I have said in previous writings, this was a yin-yang layout of the same battle they had with each other during the mid-60s when we experienced all kinds of issues with Vietnam, sexual revolutions, and generational upheavals.  This time, Saturn and Uranus had switched places, but they still battled over the same cultural, political, social, and generational topics.  That war is finally over.  We will have some smaller astrological battles this year, but it is nothing like when Jupiter and Pluto jumped into the mix last summer and things seemed so hopeless.  Sometimes, just knowing that the war is over is enough to inspire individuals because that sense of gray skies changing back to blue is all it takes to make them feel as if anything is possible.

Also, Jupiter and Uranus will both be leaving Pisces and moving into Aries this year.  There is nothing wrong with Pisces.  It is a mystical, spiritual, secretive, and intuitive zodiac sign that can offer lovely blessings, charity, and deep compassion for others.  But Jupiter loves travel, politics, cultures, mass media, academia, broadening horizons, literally and figuratively walking a mile in someone else's shoes.  And Uranus loves electricity, science, the Internet, interconnectivity, eccentricity, and socializing while remaining true to one's self.  These are both freedom loving, playful, and fun planets that hate to be made to sit quiet and meditate, pray, and methodically work through bureaucratic ooze.  It was very difficult for these two planets to shine their brightest and to give their greatest blessings from within Pisces.

In January, Jupiter enters Aries and in March, Uranus follows suit.  Aries is a zodiac sign that loves entrepreneurs, innovation, competition, butting heads, playing King of the Mountain, sparkle, zest, "me first!" and "look Ma, no hands!"  Jupiter and Uranus are quite clever, fun, inspired, and motivated within Aries' energy.

Uranus will spend years in Aries.  His love of science, electricity, and the Internet coupled with Aries' love of innovation and entrepreneurialship should create a wonderful time for Green Technology and for other brilliant new ideas.  Jupiter only spends a few months in Aries giving us an initial burst of energy, excitement, and taste of what is possible.  Then during the first few days of June, Jupiter moves into Taurus.

Taurus loves stability, especially financial stability.  At first, Jupiter and Uranus create this big bang of motivation and inspiration, but too much of that kind of energy can become manic, it is exhausting and can burn out too easily.  With Jupiter moving into Taurus, we still get growth, creativity, and a "can do" attitude, but we also get mature and responsible approaches to creating long-term sustainable changes in our lives.

So astrologically speaking, the ugliness ends, a belief in what is possible comes, and then strong and stable follow-through carries us forward.

Second, cultural observations...

Americans are easily bored.  Our media likes exciting stories, even if they have to blow things out of proportion or create excitement where none really is.  Unlike previous generations that could endure years of the Great Depression with stoic and tenacious patience.  Ours is a spoiled and scattered generation.  We are bored and tired of this old story about economic hard times and hopelessness.  The story has to change so that we will continue to participate.  Even if astrology did not work, even if the planets were still at war, I think the American people with the help of the media would create a new story of an underdog that climbs up out of the ditch and saves the day.  We never lose our love of a good underdog success story.  We are hungry for that narrative even if it seems that it is nowhere in sight.  Maybe because it is nowhere in sight.

Also, Americans are rebellious to a fault.  The daily barrage of stories in the media about how we are losing our democracy to the corporate interests will eventually anger the Americans enough that they will stand up and thumb their noses at conventional wisdom that says we are too spoiled and lazy to get up off of our behinds and do something about it.  Yes, we may be fat and out of shape, but we are still lusty for a battle and real war has beaten us up, so a war against corporations would feel like something we could actually win and feel good about.  America needs to punch something in the nose and corporations, lobbyists, and selfish greedy jerks make a compelling target.

Aries is the sign of warriors, masculinity, and battles.  We can battle poverty, greed, and the idea that a few rich people are tricking the ignorant masses into voting against their own best interests.  In 2011, we have the stamina, focus, creativity, and fighting spirit needed to finally say, "Yes, we are!"
